Riviera guide

Getting around the Cote d'Azur from the villa

From the villa's gate, much of the French Riviera is within reach in under half an hour, very often without a car. Here is how to move around like a local.

Villefranche-sur-Mer sits in the middle of the most beautiful stretch of the coast, between Nice and Monaco, with Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on its doorstep. The happy result is that you can reach almost everything worth seeing in minutes, and for the best day trips the train beats the car.

The coastal train

Villefranche-sur-Mer has its own railway station on the scenic line that runs along the shore between Nice and the Italian border at Ventimiglia. Trains are frequent in both directions, and the views from the window, all bays and pine and blue water, are part of the pleasure.

Heading west, Nice is roughly ten minutes away. Heading east, the line calls at Eze-sur-Mer, then Monaco in around fifteen to twenty minutes, Menton a little further, and the Italian border beyond. Tickets are sold at the machines on the platform; validate before you board. For a car-free day, this is by far the simplest option.

By car

The villa has a private garage for two cars, with a lift up to the main level, so arriving by car is easy. Three famous corniche roads thread the hills: the Basse Corniche along the sea, the Moyenne Corniche through Eze village, and the Grande Corniche high above for the long views.

The one thing to know is parking. In summer, spaces in Villefranche, Nice and especially Monaco are limited and metered, and the old-town lanes are narrow. For dinners and day trips it is often calmer to leave the car in the garage and take the train or a taxi.

Buses and taxis

The regional bus network links Villefranche with Nice and along the coast at a low flat fare, which is handy for the airport and for Nice itself. Taxis and private drivers are easy to arrange for evenings out or door-to-door transfers, and we are glad to organise these for you.

From the airport

Nice Cote d'Azur is the gateway, about twenty minutes away by car in normal traffic. It is one of Europe's most convenient airports for a villa holiday, close, quick to clear, and well connected. Private transfers can be arranged so you step off the plane and straight into the start of your stay.

A car-free day, the easy way

Breakfast on the terrace as the boats cross the bay. A short walk or drive to the station, then the train to Monaco for a morning of harbour and gardens, or to Eze-sur-Mer to climb up to the medieval village. Lunch by the water, an afternoon train back, and a swim in the bay before the evening. No traffic, no parking, no fuss.

Make a day of it

Turn a train ride into a proper outing. These are curated, bookable experiences in the places the coastal line reaches, all on tickadoo.

Common questions

The easiest way is the coastal train from Villefranche-sur-Mer station, which reaches Monaco in roughly fifteen to twenty minutes. Driving the Basse Corniche is scenic too, but parking in Monaco is limited, so most guests take the train.

Yes. Villefranche-sur-Mer has its own station on the coastal line between Nice and Ventimiglia, a short walk or drive from the villa, with frequent trains east to Monaco and Menton and west to Nice.

Not necessarily. The villa has a private garage for two cars if you bring one, but the train and bus network reaches Nice, Monaco and most of the coast, so many guests explore car-free.

About twenty minutes by car or taxi in normal traffic. Private airport transfers can be arranged on request.

The coastal train hugs the shoreline and links the prettiest stops in minutes, so a rail day from Villefranche to Eze-sur-Mer, Monaco or Menton is the simplest way to see a lot without driving or parking.
